Introduction

Welcome to my blog! Bienvenue! Добро пожаловать!

I am dedicating this space to the anthropological analysis of the world around me. In a spirit of reflexive anthropology, I will declare my biases and will provide some background as to who I am.

I am a French-speaker and grew up in northern Alberta. To be more precise, this is the farm where I grew up. Nothing much remains. After my father passed away, the house was sold and moved. Some of the granaries are still there and many silent memories.

I graduated from école Routhier in Falher, Alberta and then went off to complete my Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto (1991), my Master of Arts at Laval Université (1994) and eventually my PhD at the University of Alberta (2003). I am currently an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Northern British Columbia.

My research interests include ethnicity and nationhood. I have done research in my home community, the French-speaking villages and parishes of northern Alberta. For my PhD, I studied the Russian-speaking community of Narva in Estonia. In recent years, I have been conducting research into the Komi community of northern Russia. I thus speak French and Russian fluently, as well as English. In this blog, I will be examining contemporary events in Canada and Russia and analyzing the political changes now occurring in the Russian Federation.

My other interests include movies and bike riding. I am married and live in Prince George in British Columbia. I hope this blog will be of interest to you and look forward to conversing virtually on this site.
